THE AMERICAN in 2017 was held in AT&T Stadium on Sunday, February 19, 2017.  The journey to the finals began months prior with qualifier events held across the country.  Below are the results of these 2017 qualifiers.

Bareback riding is one of the wildest and most exciting events of rodeo. Bareback riders use one hand to hold the handle of a specially-designed rigging that fits around the horse’s midsection just behind its shoulders. During the ride, he brings his knees up toward his torso, then stretches his legs out again each time the horse kicks his hind feet in the air.

The rider may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand or he will be disqualified. They are also required to have their feet above and in contact with the horse’s shoulder on the first jump out of the chute. This is known as the mark-out rule and it gives the horse the advantage. A qualified ride lasts eight seconds and both rider and animal are judged, with each able to earn a total of 50 points. The judges score the horse on bucking ability and degree of difficulty and the rider on spurring motion and control.  Winning scores at The American have ranged from the high 80s to 90s.
